Trappers Unhappy With Loss Of Convention Funds

The province’s Ministry of First Nations and Métis Relations Ministry may have cut the northern trappers grant — but says it will better use the money.
The grant used to go to trappers for a convention.
But minister responsible Bill Hutchinson says the money can help and support trappers in better ways, such as equipping the northern Enterprise Regions with a better understanding of the pressures in the fur market so that they have the expertise to meet the needs of trappers.
The president of the Northern Saskatchewan Trappers Association says he’s disappointed by the loss of the convention fund.
Clifford Ray says his group generally got $50,000 a year.
He says they still have money for next month’s convention in La Ronge, but nothing after that.
Ray says his group suspected this was coming, adding the trappers have had a lot of problems with the current government honouring the agreements of the previous one.
He says the trappers will look for other sources of funding.
