A new hockey arena could be coming to La Ronge.

Town council has decided to start putting money aside and investing in a plan to build a new multi-functional rink.

The Town of La Ronge is looking for community members, including residents of Air Ronge and adjoining Lac La Ronge Indian Band reserves, to sit on a committee of town council to explore future construction of the arena.

La Ronge Mayor Thomas Sierzycki says the town council has discussed the need for a new rink.

The Mel Heglund Uniplex is over three decades old, and was originally built as a minor hockey rink before it was renovated to accommodate an SJHL team in 1998.

Sierzycki says the new arena would cater to a lot of different groups, including the SJHL’s Ice Wolves.

He says it will have enough seating capacity to host SJHL games, and include equipment and training rooms.

Sierzycki says it won’t be built next year or the year after, but “definitely down the line”.

He also says it will be built for the long-term, noting a rink is not easy to build.

Anyone interested in sitting on the committee of council is asked to submit a brief letter oulining their experience and interest to the La Ronge town office by March 19th.
