Three men are facing multiple weapons-related charges after a traffic stop on Highway 2 near La Ronge led to the seizure of a firearm, firearm parts, a machete and body armour.

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch stopped a vehicle on Oct. 26 after observing firearm parts in plain view.

Officers also determined the vehicle had previously been reported stolen in the La Ronge area.

Two men were arrested at the scene, while a third fled into a nearby wooded area. RCMP police dog services and a remotely piloted aircraft system were used to locate and arrest the suspect.

Police say a subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a firearm, several firearm parts, a machete and soft body armour.

As a result of the investigation, 49-year-old Travis Roberts, 40-year-old Allan Sanderson, and 37-year-old David McKenzie, all from the La Ronge area, have each been charged with two counts of careless use of a firearm, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

RCMP say Roberts faces additional charges including unauthorized possession of a firearm, weapons possession contrary to a prohibition order, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

Sanderson is also charged with unauthorized firearm possession and weapons possession contrary to a prohibition order.

McKenzie faces two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Two of the accused appeared in La Ronge Provincial Court on Oct. 29, while the third appeared on Oct. 30.

The investigation remains ongoing.
