The North American Indigenous Games Council has officially announced the conditional award of the 2028 version of games to the Norway House Cree Nation and the Southern Chiefs’ Organization.

The events will take place in Winnipeg from July 9 to 23, 2028.

The landmark gathering is expected to draw upwards of 5,250 Indigenous athletes, coaches, and team officials from across North America.

Leaders from across the region have expressed pride in securing the Games.

“Movement is medicine, and the North American Indigenous Games give our young people an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen friendships, and take pride in who they are,” said Grand Chief Jerry Daniels of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization. “For SCO’s member Nations, these Games are an opportunity to celebrate First Nations excellence and inspire the next generation, on and off the field.”

Chief Season Roulette of Norway House Cree Nation echoed that sentiment, noting the rich athletic tradition of northern communities.

“These Games will inspire our youth to dream big, work hard, and believe that their goals are within reach,” stated Chief Season Roulette. “We look forward to welcoming Nations from across Turtle Island as relatives and creating memories that will last for generations to come.”

Following this conditional award, organizers will work with governments and other partners to finalize requirements and officially establish the 2028 NAIG Host Society.
