The Melfort & Area Food Bank is appealing to residents for financial support, saying rising costs and increasing demand have left the organization facing an uncertain future.
In a public appeal posted Oct. 3, the food bank said cash donations have declined while operating costs continue to climb, placing pressure on its ability to continue serving local families.
The food bank said its monthly operating costs are approximately $2,000. In addition to distributing donated food, it purchases essentials such as milk and eggs for the hampers it provides to individuals and families in need. At the same time, demand for assistance continues to increase.
According to the Melfort Food Bank, 21 new families registered with the food bank in August alone, representing more than 100 additional people seeking support.
“The need for our services continues to grow,” the organization stated.
The food bank described itself as an essential service for Melfort and the surrounding area and warned that its current financial situation could become critical in the coming months. The organization said its existing bank balance would allow operations to continue for only a limited time if additional funding is not secured.
“It would be heartbreaking to see our doors close when so many people depend on us,” the post said.
The Melfort & Area Food Bank, located at 201 Broadway Ave. N., serves residents in Melfort and northeastern Saskatchewan. It is a registered charity and a member of Food Banks of Saskatchewan.
Food banks across Saskatchewan and Canada have reported increased demand in recent years as households continue to manage rising living costs. The Melfort organization’s latest appeal reflects those challenges at the local level, with more families turning to community supports while charitable organizations work to meet growing needs.
The food bank also expressed gratitude to donors, volunteers and community members who have supported its work.
“Your generosity allows us to continue putting food on the tables of families and individuals in our community,” the Melfort Food Bank said.
Residents wishing to support the food bank can donate by e-transfer, mail a cheque or make a donation directly at the food bank’s location. Tax receipts are available upon request.
