An animal behaviourist is offering some tips on how to deal with a potential dog attack in the wake of the fatal mauling in Canoe Lake.

Teresa Lewin says residents should stay still if a dangerous animal approaches them, as sudden movement can trigger a response.

She says once a dog stops, it’s best to move sideways away from it.

If a child is knocked down by a dog, Lewin says the best thing for that child to do is to keep their hands up by their face and neck and bring their body into a ball, staying face down on the ground.

Lewin says dogs will sometimes run in and take a little nip hoping to provoke a reaction.

She says the important thing is to stay calm.

Meantime, the mayor of Buffalo Narrows says northern communities should do whatever they feel will make their residents safer.

Bobby Woods says his community uses a dog catcher and it has worked well.

Woods says he doesn’t think communities can rely on government or police to take care of the problem.

He says they will have to come up with the solution that is right for them.
