The Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada is taking steps to provide culturally safe health care across Canada.

The group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian Healthcare Association to develop courses aimed at integrating cultural learning in the workplace.

The association’s Audrey Lawrence says health professionals need to reduce practices that may recreate previous traumas inflicted upon Aboriginal people.

She adds it was a Maori nurse in New Zealand who helped get the ball rolling on this subject.
