James Smith Cree Nation Chief and Council are warning dog owners to keep their animals secured as leadership considers measures to address loose and stray dogs in the community.
In a community advisory posted on Sept. 21, James Smith Chief and Council said there will be “zero tolerance” for dogs being allowed to roam freely, with owners expected to know where their animals are and keep them properly secured on their property.
In the public notice, it cited safety concerns as the reason for the warning, saying loose dogs can pose a risk to community members, particularly children, Elders and people walking in the community.
James Smith Cree Nation said they are reviewing how the issue will be handled in the future, including potential bylaws, enforcement measures and fines for repeated violations.
No specific bylaw, enforcement process or fine was announced in the advisory.
In the meantime, dog owners are being asked to take immediate steps to ensure their animals are accounted for and secured. Owners are also being asked to check their properties for areas where dogs may be escaping and address those issues to prevent animals from roaming.
“Thank you for your immediate attention and cooperation,” the Office of Chief and Council said.
