Métis citizens in northern Saskatchewan will soon have access to 12 new affordable rental homes through a housing project led by Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S).
Construction is set to begin on tiny homes in three northern communities, with six units planned for La Loche, three for Cumberland House and three for Buffalo Narrows. The homes will provide affordable rental housing for single Métis citizens with low incomes and are expected to be completed in spring 2027.
The $3.26 million dollar project is being funded through a partnership between MN-S, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada. The federal and provincial governments are contributing $1.5 million through the National Housing Strategy’s Saskatchewan Priorities Initiative and the Rental Development Program, while MN-S is providing $1.58 million.
Officials gathered in Buffalo Narrows to mark the start of the project, which is aimed at increasing access to safe and affordable housing in northern communities.
“Métis Nation-Saskatchewan is a trusted partner to Canada and Saskatchewan, leading the way and working together to find innovative ways to support Métis citizens,” Métis Nation-Saskatchewan President Glen McCallum said. “Over the next week, we announce 12 new energy-efficient housing units in MN-S Northern Region 2 and Eastern Region 1. When construction is complete, the affordable rental homes will help individuals and Elders in Buffalo Narrows, La Loche, and Cumberland House manage the high cost of living. This is what partnership achieves. This is what self-government delivers.”
The project is part of an ongoing partnership between MN-S and the provincial and federal governments to improve housing opportunities for Métis citizens across northern Saskatchewan.
“These 12 new homes will create new housing opportunities for Métis citizens in northern Saskatchewan, while helping people remain connected to their families, culture and communities,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Terry Jenson said. “We are proud to work with Métis Nation-Saskatchewan and our partners to help make this important project possible.”
According to the province, the Rental Development Program provides forgivable loans to support the construction of affordable rental units for households with low incomes.
