Shannon Elizabeth, a Metis Cree singer-songwriter from Peepeekisis First Nation, has been a performer since she was a child. Her love of music began when she was nine years old while singing with her family band performing all over western Canada.
She performed as the opening act at the Exchange Folk Festival in Regina on August 8th.
“My experience was wonderful, it was surreal,” said Elizabeth. “The people were great; the stage was awesome.”
In 2017, she released a six-track solo album called “Way to Memphis” and said that experience was wonderful as she recorded out of Nashville, Tennessee with New Sun Records where she worked with Dewayne Strobel, Crystal Shawanda and Dave Row.
Her popularity grew when her favourite song “Reckless” was released and said, “That was real powerful for me.”
Now working on her second solo album, she is looking forward to it being released in early fall of 2027, and said, “It’s going to be a 14 track country rock album, Americana roots, with New Sun Records with Crystal Shawanda down in Tennessee.”
Throughout the year she focuses on songwriting and performs at music festivals and venues across Canada and the United States. Her music reflects personal stories and lived experiences and she draws inspiration from those closest to her.
“It’s kind of like my family’s narrative,” said Elizabeth.
Her versatility shines both as a Collaborative Artist and as a Solo Artist.
“It’s quite the balance, both as a solo act, and with the band, and has kept me quite busy so it’s really exciting,” said Elizabeth.
Her collaborative 13 track album with Ray Elliott, Western Medicine, is set to be fully released in September. Western Medicine has been charting on the Indigenous Countdown with singles playing on national radio airways in Canada, the United States and in the United Kingdom.
This year, Western Medicine received a Saskatchewan Country Music Association (SCMA) nomination for Indigenous Artist of the Year.
Elizabeth is going to be performing with her band, Western Medicine, at the Canadian Country Crawl in Saskatoon on September 19th. The location will be announced in the coming weeks.
