Mirtha Rivera was a board member with Carmichael Outreach for the past 10 years, up until last Tuesday. She resigned over concerns about the non-profit’s declining financial situation.
Carmichael Outreach opened in Regina in 1988.
This non-profit charity in Regina assists individuals in the community facing poverty, hardship and substance use by offering programs and services to the most vulnerable.
Carmichael Outreach serves up to 250 meals daily, stated in a Facebook post from August 20, 2025.
“The financial situation is not viable that we can survive until the end of the year,” said Rivera. “I assume accountability and responsibility that we as a board neglected the people who we’re serving. We failed the staff and we failed the community at large.”
Rivera has served on the board in many capacities.
She feels the board members should all resign as they were not communicating appropriately when they saw the financial shortfall and there was a lack of diligence to take control of what has been going on.
“I think that will be the responsible thing to do because the job was not done and how are we going to trust them that there going to do that job,” said Rivera.
Carmichael Outreach has relied on community donations and Rivera is hopeful the community will come through and help to avoid a closure of operations.
In a statement from the Board of Directors of Carmichael Outreach, “The board has been working with the leadership team, staff, volunteers, donors and community partners to strengthen the organization’s long-term financial sustainability.”
“Like many charities across Canada, Carmichael Outreach has faced significant financial pressures as demand for our services has increased while charitable giving has declined,” noted in the statement from the Board of Directors.
The board is thankful for the extraordinary response from the community and said, “We can confirm that our doors will remain open and services will continue without interruption anytime in the immediate future. We are deeply grateful to every individual, business, foundation, and community partner who answered our recent appeal.”
