Saskatchewan conservation officers, RCMP, and the Coroner’s Service are investigating after two people were found dead in the McTavish Lake area in what authorities believe may be a wildlife-related incident.
La Ronge RCMP received a call for service on July 15 regarding a suspected wildlife incident at McTavish Lake. Officers were called after two deceased individuals in the area were located.
The Ministry of Community Safety has confirmed the deaths are suspected to be wildlife related, although the exact circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been released.
The Conservation Officer Service’s Wildlife Human Attack Response Team has been deployed to the area and is working with investigators to determine what happened.
Conservation officers are also attempting to identify and locate the animal or animals that may have been involved.
The investigation remains in its early phases.
The Ministry of Community Safety has extended its condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy.
Residents, cabin owners, visitors, and outdoor recreation users are being urged to exercise caution while in the area and to take steps to avoid wildlife encounters until more information becomes available.
Officials have not released the identities of the deceased, and no further details are being provided at this time.
McTavish Lake is a remote northern Saskatchewan lake situated about 88 kilometres north of La Ronge.
The fly-in lake is located in the Canadian Shield and is a popular destination for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.
