The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is to investigate the officer involved shooting that occurred on July 7th in Regina.

On July 7, at approximately 02:11 a.m., RPS received a report that an adult male was intoxicated, firing a crossbow inside the residence, and punching holes in the wall.

At approximately 02:14 a.m., RPS members arrived at the location of the call and at approximately 2:20 a.m., entered the residence.

Shortly after entering the residence, a confrontation occurred with the 35-year-old male who was the subject of the initial call.

During the confrontation members issued verbal commands and two members of RPS discharged their service pistols, striking the man.

RPS members provided first aid to the man and contacted EMS.

EMS arrived at the residence at approximately 2:25 a.m. and assumed responsibility for the man’s care.

The man was transported to a hospital in Regina, where he remains in stable condition.

SIRT’s investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s arrest.

RPS will maintain responsibility for the investigation of the original complaint as well as the man’s actions during the incident.

A crossbow was recovered from the incident scene and has been secured as an exhibit for both the SIRT and RPS investigations.

A community liaison will also be appointed pursuant to S.91.12(1)(a) of The Police Act, 1990.

A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.

SIRT’s mandate is to investigate alleged cases of serious injury, death, sexual assault or interpersonal violence arising from the actions or omissions of on and off-duty police officers, or while an individual is in police custody.
