As children and families enjoyed a nice day at the North West Leisure Centre splash park, Regina City Police (RPS) officers came and handed out cold treats.

The initiative started five years ago and is called “Copsicle Day.”

It is a community engagement initiative where officers visit local parks and spray pads to hand out free popsicles to meet and interact with residents in a casual, positive setting.

“A friend of mine that I worked with, she actually started it and then I just kind of took it over when she left,” said Constable Richard Claude, with the Cultural and Community Diversity Unit at RPS.

As some children and youth might see police and have a sense of fear, Constable Claude said the police are trying to break down barriers and foster community relationships so that children feel more comfortable approaching police officers.

“Some of them have had experiences with the police officers and know a little bit different, but we get down to their level, and hopefully they leave on a better note,” said Constable Claude.

Weather permitting, RPS will be putting on these events all over the city.

Constable Claude said, “Police officers are your friends, and at any time if you need to talk to us or speak with us, and we don’t look busy, approach us for sure, 100 per cent.”

A young boy named Grady Peters biked to the park with his friend.

After meeting the officers he said, “It was fun. It’s pretty hot out and I appreciate it.”

When asked how he feels about the police when he see’s them, Grady said, “Safe and protected.”
