The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) has reached an agreement with Denison Mines Corp. over the proposed Wheeler River uranium project, leading the Nation to discontinue its judicial review of the project’s provincial approval.
As part of the agreement, PBCN will receive financial benefits, employment and business opportunities for members, and funding to establish a Nation-led environmental monitoring program.
“This agreement is about making sure our people are part of the work happening on our lands,” said Chief Peter Beatty. “Our members know this territory, and they have an important role to play in protecting it.”
PBCN said its concerns about the project’s potential impacts on its traditional territory were addressed through discussions with Denison, leading the Nation to formally support the development.
The agreement also includes plans for a community-based environmental monitoring program owned and operated by PBCN.
“Through environmental monitoring, training and employment, this agreement creates real opportunities while supporting responsible development,” Beatty said.
Denison Mines President and CEO David Cates welcomed the agreement, saying, “We are pleased to have reached this important agreement with PBCN and look forward to working together as the Wheeler River project advances.”
