A Saskatchewan hockey legend is being recognized nationally as part of Canada Post’s newest Indigenous Leaders stamp collection.
Former NHL star and Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier is one of three Indigenous sports leaders featured in the fifth annual Indigenous Leaders stamp series unveiled this week ahead of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Trottier, who was born in Val Marie, Saskatchewan and is of Métis heritage, won six Stanley Cups during a Hall of Fame career that included stops with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. He remains one of the most accomplished Indigenous athletes in Canadian history.
Joining Trottier in this year’s stamp issue are Chief Wilton Littlechild, a former athlete, lawyer and advocate for Indigenous participation in sport, and Edward Lennie, who helped preserve and promote traditional Inuit games and Arctic sports.
Canada Post says the annual stamp series is designed to recognize Indigenous leaders who have made significant contributions to Canadian society. This year’s edition focuses on individuals whose work helped advance sport, recreation and opportunities for Indigenous youth.
The unveiling took place in Calgary and coincides with celebrations leading up to National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.
