An emotional and historic moment unfolded in Prince Albert last week as community members gathered to mark the beginning of a new chapter for the local Aboriginal Head Start program with the introduction of a new pre-school for the west hill neighborhood.

Surrounded by Elders, families, head start alumni, community leaders and partners, the ceremony began.

The gathering celebrated the legacy and future of the Prince Albert Head Start program, which first opened its doors in 1996.

“Over the past 30 years, we have not only grown in numbers, but in heart, vision, and purpose. From the same small place we have proudly called home for three decades, we have continued to expand our program, our staff, and the supports we offer to children and their families in the community. Today marks a truly wonderful day in our history,” said Trena Larocque, executive director of the Prince Albert Aboriginal Head Start Program.

The event marked the official groundbreaking of a new facility, seen as a major step forward for the program.

Organizers say the expanded space will allow Head Start to continue offering services focused on early learning, health, nutrition, language revitalization and family support.

The new building was described as more than just physical space — but as a symbol of hope, opportunity and long-term investment in future generations.

Organizers also expressed gratitude to the Public Health Agency of Canada for ongoing support, and to Ronald McDonald House Charities Saskatchewan for contributing the land for the new site.

During the event, the children were called to the front of the tents to do a soil collecting ceremony where the dirt collected will be saved as a reminder of the kindness and generosity of the Ronald McDonald House Charities donation of land.

They described the land transfer as an act of generosity and reconciliation, helping ensure the program can continue to grow and serve families in the community.

The children and staff look forward to continuing programs at the new pre-school in the west hill neighborhood.
