A 67-year-old woman is facing multiple criminal charges following the death of a child on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation.

Rosthern RCMP were called to a residence on the First Nation on May 10 after receiving a report of a child in medical distress.

EMS attended the scene and declared the child, who was under the age of 12, deceased.

Following further investigation and consultation with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, RCMP determined the death was suspicious in nature.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon Serious Crimes Unit assumed carriage of the investigation.

Police arrested a 67-year-old woman on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation on June 10.

She is charged with one count each of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failure to provide the necessaries of life and abandoning a child.

RCMP have not released the names of either the accused or the child to protect the child’s identity and because a publication ban may be sought.

The accused made her first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court on June 11 and is scheduled to appear next in Rosthern Provincial Court on June 17.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Team, Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team, and Serious Crimes Units from Prince Albert and Battlefords assisted in the investigation.
