Montreal Lake Cree Nation has officially broken ground on a new RCMP detachment, marking what leadership says is a major step toward improving community safety and emergency response.
The ceremony was held Wednesday at the future detachment site on Highway 969, and included representatives from MLCN, Prince Albert Grand Council, the RCMP and project partners.
Chief Joyce Naytowhow-McLeod said the new building reflects years of advocacy for better public safety infrastructure.
“This is an important milestone for Montreal Lake Cree Nation,” she said. “The new RCMP detachment will support community safety, strengthen emergency response and help ensure our members have access to policing services closer to home.”
The approximately 10,000-square-foot facility will include cultural design elements, including a room designated for trauma support, prayer and healing, along with mural paintings near the entrance.
Sgt. Rene Giroux, detachment commander of Waskesiu/Montreal Lake RCMP, said the project is about more than a building, describing it as a modern and welcoming space where community members can report crime, connect with officers and strengthen partnerships.
The $16-million project is jointly funded by the federal and provincial governments, with construction expected to be completed in March 2027.
Once complete, Montreal Lake Cree Nation will become the host detachment, while Waskesiu Lake will move to sub-detachment status.
