Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit has released new details as investigators continue to examine the June 1 shooting that left a woman dead and a man injured in Pelican Narrows.
Police say the deceased has been identified as a 28-year-old woman from Pelican Narrows. Her name has not been released by the RMP.
The injured man remains in hospital, but RCMP say his injuries are now considered non-life-threatening.
Investigators believe an altercation involving a group of individuals known to one another began at a residence on Chachakew Street, where the woman was injured. Minutes later, the male victim was injured on a nearby road close to the local health clinic.
RCMP emphasized the incident did not occur inside the clinic.
A dangerous person alert issued during the initial stages of the investigation was based on information suggesting the shooting may have occurred at the clinic and could have been random. Police have since cancelled the alert and say there is no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety.
An individual arrested on June 1 has been released without charge after investigators gathered additional evidence.
Police have now released video of a suspect described as a man dressed entirely in black and carrying a handgun and cellphone. (Avilable here)
“We know the community of Pelican Narrows is on edge because of this shooting, and other recent violent events,” said Inspector Ashley St. Germaine, acting officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes Branch. “Our number one priority right now is the safety of Pelican Narrows residents.”
St. Germaine is urging anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about the shooting to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers immediately. Investigators say an increased police presence will remain in the community as the homicide investigation continues.
