More than 1,400 people from Red Earth Cree Nation and Shoal Lake Cree Nation remain displaced as crews continue battling the Cayford wildfire in northeastern Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says approximately 1,200 residents from Red Earth Cree Nation and 258 from Shoal Lake Cree Nation have been evacuated, with most staying in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw.
SPSA officials say no homes or critical infrastructure have been lost.
The Cayford fire has grown to roughly 11,500 hectares, but SPSA Executive Director Bryan Chartrand said firefighters experienced “very minimal growth” on Sunday and that containment lines are holding.
He added that “no structures have been lost” despite the fire burning past several cabins.
Meanwhile, the Lobstick wildfire near Shellbrook and Duck Lake remains Saskatchewan’s largest active fire at nearly 19,000 hectares.
Officials say weekend rainfall helped crews strengthen fire guards and protect communities east of the North Saskatchewan River.
Premier Scott Moe said the province is in “a stronger position today than maybe we were four days ago,” but cautioned that both fires remain uncontained and firefighting efforts continue across central and northeastern Saskatchewan.
The SPSA reported 10 active wildfires in the province as of Monday afternoon.
