Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation leadership has announced a series of emergency safety measures for Pelican Narrows following escalating violence and firearm-related incidents.

The measures were approved during an emergency meeting Thursday evening involving Pelican Narrows council members.

Effective immediately, security checkpoints will be re-established using outside security resources, while ATVs, dirt bikes, side-by-sides and other off-road vehicles are banned until further notice.

Fireworks and private gatherings inside homes — including wedding celebrations, graduation parties and birthdays — have also been prohibited temporarily.

PBCN says local stores and fuel providers will be directed not to sell gasoline intended for off-road vehicles.

Leadership says RCMP have advised there are currently no public safety threats in the community, but officials are continuing to work with police and safety personnel to prevent further violence and protect residents.

There were reports of an increased police presence in the northern community on Thursday night.
