A new emergency shelter and healing facility officially opened called Iskwew-Awasis Waskaykan Women’s Shelter on Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation land near Prince Albert, bringing together community leaders, elders, government representatives, police services, and frontline workers to celebrate a project which was years in the making.
The grand opening ceremony featured prayers, speeches, and acknowledgements recognizing the many organizations and individuals who helped bring the shelter to life.
Community leaders described the facility as a place of safety, healing, and hope for women, children, and families affected by domestic violence and crisis situations.
“I dreamt of this all the time. The safe shelter for children,” said Clarisse Lecoq, PBCN Urban Councellor. “The kids experience it. And in order to help, we want them to know that we are here for them today and moving forward, they will be in good hands.”
