Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team has cleared RCMP officers of any wrongdoing in connection to an in-custody death in Melfort in May 2025.
According to the final report, the 44-year-old man died from acute cocaine toxicity, with coronary artery disease listed as a contributing factor.
The man had been taken into custody under the Mental Health Services Act after exhibiting erratic behaviour and was transported between hospital and the RCMP detachment that day.
SIRT found no evidence that police use of force caused or contributed to his death, noting interactions with officers involved minimal force.
The report also concluded the man was regularly monitored while in custody, and officers responded appropriately when he went into medical distress.
Investigators determined police actions did not represent a departure from expected standards of care.
