There will now be more affordable housing alternatives in North Battleford for both people and families.

By transforming Valleyview Tower II from senior social housing to a mixed-use, affordable housing model and optimizing the community’s housing portfolio, the Saskatchewan government is addressing the housing requirements of the area.

“We are taking a new and innovative approach to expand safe and affordable housing and give more individuals and families a place to call home.” Social Services Minister Terry Jenson said.

Individuals and families with low to moderate earnings who might not otherwise be eligible for social housing will have access to affordable homes under the new paradigm.

Tenants looking for affordable accommodation can rent a one-bedroom apartment for $870 per month or a two-bedroom apartment for $1,000 per month, which includes utilities and internet.

Seniors residing in Valleyview Tower II were given the choice to stay in the structure or were assisted in moving to the adjacent Valleyview Tower I, which is still used as social housing for seniors.

In order to address the community’s demand for inexpensive housing alternatives for non-seniors and small families, Valleyview Tower I was designated as senior housing, and Valleyview Tower II was made available for mixed-use.

Eight two-bedroom apartments and eight one-bedroom apartments make up the 89-unit Valleyview Tower II.

The Battlefords Housing Authority will begin accepting tenant applications on May 1.

First-come, first-served applications are being taken, and as part of the application process, candidates will have their income evaluated and tested.
