A man who previously served a 5-year prison sentence for defrauding Whitecap Dakota First Nation is once again facing fraud charges.

In 2015, Hugo Gallegos was handed the prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to stealing $5.8 million from the First Nation, where he worked as an accountant from 2009-2013.

This week, Regina police announced that the now 53-year-old Gallegos was one of two individuals charged with fraud of more than one million dollars.

Police say from 2021 to 2023 Gallegos made several unauthorized payments to himself while working for a different company.

According to police, Gallegos also used company funds to make payments for vehicles, rent, and to pay off credit cards.

Gallegos is officially charged with fraud over $5,000, laundering proceeds of a crime, and theft over $5,000.

Another man was also charged who police say was given several unauthorized payments as well.

That person has been identified as 72-year-old Dennis Medernach of Saskatoon.

Police did not name the company that was allegedly defrauded by Gallegos this time.

He made his first court appearance on the matter earlier this week.
