The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) has announced nomination meetings for its upcoming band election, with candidates for chief and councillor positions to be nominated March 13.

According to a public notice from the band, nomination meetings will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. across six electoral sections within the LLRIB.

The meetings will allow electors to nominate candidates for one chief position and 12 councillor positions representing communities throughout the band’s territory.

Nomination meetings will be held at the following locations:

  • Electoral Section 1: White Hall, Little Red River Reserve (#106C and #106D) — two councillor positions
  • Electoral Section 2: Band Hall, Grandmother’s Bay Reserve (#219) — one councillor position
  • Electoral Section 3: Charlie Halkett Memorial Band Hall, Morin Lake Reserve (#217) — one councillor position
  • Electoral Section 4: Sucker River Band Hall, Sucker River Reserve (#156C) — one councillor position
  • Electoral Section 5: Rhonda Hardlotte Band Hall, Stanley Mission Reserve (#157) — three councillor positions
  • Electoral Section 6: Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre, Lac La Ronge Reserve (#156) and Kitsaki Reserve (#156B) — four councillor positions

In the post from LLRIB, candidates seeking the position of chief or councillor must meet several requirements under the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Election Act.

Among the eligibility criteria, candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and eligible to vote under the Act
  • Provide a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check issued within the past six months
  • Have no more than $1,000 in outstanding debt to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band or its affiliated entities
  • Not have been convicted of corrupt election practices

Councillor candidates must also meet any residency requirements tied to the electoral section they intend to represent.

LLRIB said eligible electors may nominate and second candidates during the nomination meeting. If more candidates are nominated than positions available, an election will be held in accordance with band election regulations.

Candidates may also speak in support of their nomination during the meeting.

Copies of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Election Act and Election Regulations are available from the band administration office or through the LLRIB website.

The nomination process is being overseen by Chief Electoral Officer Randy Clarke, with the election office based in La Ronge.
