Prince Albert Grand Council chiefs have endorsed a policing feasibility study, but a decision on the creation of a police service will happen at a later date.

PAGC chiefs recently passed a resolution endorsing the feasibility study, which has been undertaken over the past few years.

The study examines whether a PAGC- led First Nations police service is viable, what resources would be required to run it, and how it can be structured.

In a statement from the PAGC, they were quick to point out that the passed resolution does not approve the creation of a police service at this time.

The resolution now gives member nations a chance to use the study to inform their membership, support engagement and dialogue, guide discussions with governments, and assist in future decision making.

PAGC chiefs were also clear that no policing agreement would be supported if it requires communities to inherit a deficit.

The now approved feasibility study will be presented to member nations in the coming months.

A final decision on whether the grand council will move forward with a police service will take place at a future assembly.
