The northern community of La Loche is marking the anniversary today of one of the community’s most painful moment.
Four people died and seven others were injured in a mass shooting in La Loche on this day in 2016.
Over the past ten years, the school has been closed on the anniversary of the shooting.
This year, the Northern Lights School Division says a community ceremony will be held at the high school in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Village of La Loche has organized activities for the evening.
Some residents say it is the communities way of doing their best to move forward on the healing journey.
The Northern Lights School Division says next year the school will again shift toward a normal day of learning on the anniversary.
The school division says the shift reflects the values of the Dene High School and how the community is moving forward in healing.
