Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation says progress on temporary homes for Denare Beach Evacuees is ahead of schedule.

The temporary housing is being constructed for those who lost their homes during this past summer’s wildfires.

According to PBCN, four of the units are complete, or near completion, and 20 other homes have been framed.

Councillor Clayton Sewap, PBCN’s councillor for Denare Beach, says the fast paced construction reflects strong coordination.

“Within six months, we’ve got all 24 houses framed, and two are basically ready to move,” he said. “I’m very pleased with the progress. I’m happy with our contractors, our housing director Gerald Hyman, and the support from Chief and Council. Without the teamwork, we wouldn’t have been able to move these houses within six months.”

Delivery of the first homes is expected to begin within the next 10 days depending on the weather.

All of the homes are expected to be delivered throughout the winter.
