The Saskatchewan Indigenous Cultural Centre says this year’s iteration of the now annual Language Keepers Gathering was a success.
Organizer’s say this year’s event was a significant milestone as the gathering began as a small but initiative, which has now grown into the cultural centre’s meaningful celebrations.
The gathering dedicated to the protection, promotion, and celebration of First Nations languages.
This year’s theme was, “Our Sacred Languages: Walk with Us.”
Organizers say the theme served as both an invitation and a reminder that Indigenous languages are living expressions of laws, teachings, humour, and spirituality.
“These languages connect communities to the land, ancestors, and future generations. Speaking these languages reinforces identity, ties to land, and sovereignty. The Language Keepers Gathering is where this strength is celebrated and renewed,” said SICC President, Darlene Brander.
According to organizer’s the conference drew over 500 attendees.
This year’s event featured keynote speeches from Commissioner Ronald Ignace and Elder Louise Fraser, along with panels and workshops designed for both language learners and fluent speakers.
Participants traveled from different parts of Saskatchewan and nearby provinces.
Next year’s Language Keepers Gathering is scheduled for November 3rd and 4th, 2026.
