Denare Beach residents are beginning the process of moving into new temporary housing units.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says residents of the community are doing walk throughs of the newly established temporary housing units while signing leases and receiving keys.

The temporary housing plan was introduced in September after the northeast community was ravaged by a wildfire this past summer.

“Ensuring that the residents of Denare Beach who have been displaced by the Wolf Fire have suitable housing is our top priority,” Denare Beach Council said in a joint statement. “These temporary units are crucial in supporting this effort.”

According to the SPSA, there are currently 26 houses in the community with five more arriving in the coming weeks.

“Denare Beach has shown strength and resilience as their community works through recovery efforts,” Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod, K.C. said. “This is one of many challenges that the village and their residents have overcome and is a milestone to celebrate.”

In the meantime, the government says debris cleanup in Denare Beach is nearly finished.
