The inaugural Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary has been awarded to two exemplary graduating students from Churchill Community High School in La Ronge, Kristjana Bergsveinson and Xyrene Cheng. The Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary provides funding each semester to support one to two northern students each year from La Ronge, SK as they work towards post-secondary education.

The Bursary was named after La Ronge-based lawyer, Wayne Buckle. Buckle worked in many legal settings, including private practice, Legal Aid and the Prosecution’s office. He attended the University of Saskatchewan and did his law practicum in Prince Albert. Wayne was a man who loved spending time in the quiet of the north with his family and friends, especially Wadin Bay, the place he called home. He was a longtime advocate for education.

This bursary is in recognition of Buckle’s dedication to education, his profession, friendship, family and love of La Ronge. The Bursary program will accept one to two graduating students each year to support their ongoing education. The next open round for applications to the Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary will be announced in late spring 2026. The Wayne Buckle Memorial Bursary committee congratulates both recipients on their stellar commitments to their community and their education thus far, and looks forward to supporting them and other students as they continue their education journeys.
