The Amazing Race Canada is kicking off their 11th season with their first-ever all-female Indigenous team on CTV at 7 p.m., Saskatchewan time, on Tuesdays starting on July 8th and going until there is only one team left standing.
This year Rebecca Merasty and Rebecca Watt teamed up together to take on this intense competition.
Rebecca Merasty is from the Flying Dust First Nation in Treaty Six Territory in northern Saskatchewan.
And Rebecca Watt is from Wrigley in Treaty 11 Territory in the Northwest Territories.
In The Amazing Race Canada, teams of two are followed as they race across Canada.
When asked about why they joined The Amazing Race Canada, the “Rebeccas” were tempted by fate because both Merasty and Watt were individually approached to appear on the show.
“Is this creator telling us that we need to go on the Amazing Race? And because we’re roommates and we’re both Rebecca’s, there was no question of who else we would do this with. So we were just like, Okay, we’re doing it,” said Watt.
This competition can be tough, but the Rebeccas shared that their deadly auntie’s laughs kept them going.
“One of our messages is being true and honest to who you are and being real and feeling how you need to feel and moving through that. And that’s what strength is to us, right! And we aren’t where we are without our ancestors or those who came before us. So using all that you have within you—the sadness, the goodness, the happiness, and the helping—that moves you forward,” explained Merasty.
Each season of The Amazing Race Canada is divided into legs, where teams must solve puzzles, find their way around unfamiliar places, communicate with people, fulfill mental and physical tasks, and travel by vehicle, taxi, boat, airplane, and other means.
A $250,000 grand prize and other bonuses from the show’s sponsors are awarded to the first team to cross the finish line.
