A Conservative MP says northern Saskatchewan has been eagerly awaiting an infrastructure announcement made earlier this week.

Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Rob Clarke is referring to the $189 million Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund.

Over the next six years, the province and Ottawa will invest $94.5 million to help communities with populations of less than 100,000 people to improve their infrastructure.

Communities will be able to apply for projects like water treatment plants, highway building and sports and culture facilities.

In the first intake, $12 million will be set aside for northern Saskatchewan, while $50 million has been allocated for the rest of the province.

First Nations are also able to apply, but the municipality in which they are located must formally endorse the project.

The applications will be rated by a committee through a competitive process.

The municipalities with successful funding bids will be required to come up with matching funds.

The deadline for the first intake of applications is August 29th.
