Trappers and other traditional land users will be invited to an upcoming northern roundtable on the duty to consult issue, according to a prominent First Nations leader.

Meadow Lake Tribal Council Tribal Chief Helen Ben says the roundtable is needed to address issues not covered in this week’s consultation and accommodation conference in Saskatoon.

Ben says not enough time was made available for leaders at the event in Saskatoon to really get at the issues.

She says the MLTC and the Prince Albert Grand Council are taking steps to hold another roundtable where issues could be dealt with at length, and in the presence of government officials.

The provincial government has already agreed to hold a northern summit on the issue.

Ben says she hopes to see the northern roundtable take place in the early fall, possibly in Prince Albert.
