The mayor of La Loche reports good progress is being made on an exploration agreement with an Alberta-based energy company.

Georgina Jolibois says the deal is a necessary first step towards a long-term impact benefits agreement with Oilsands Quest.

She says environmental and traditional lifestyle concerns must be taken into consideration, along with economic development.

Jolibois says the village is negotiating on behalf of all members of the local development corporation.

As well, she notes Areva and Cameco have indicated they’re interested in having lab services close to their northern operations.

Jolibois says spin-off opportunities like this only stress the importance of her village’s workforce.

She adds the need for post-secondary education and skills training is another issue that needs to be addressed.
