The James Smith Cree Nation has declared a state of emergency in response to what it said were numerous murders and assaults of its members earlier Sunday.

In a statement, the First Nation said leadership voted unanimously for the state of emergency.

Two Emergency Operations Centres have been set up to help provide health support to the communities.

 

Update 4:30PM

Law enforcement agencies in the three prairie provinces are on high alert, searching for two men suspected of killing multiple people. RCMP allege that Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson are accused in the stabbing deaths of 10 people and injuring 15 others on the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, in a killing spree Sunday. RCMP are investigating 13 different crime scenes.

Earlier today, authorities said they received a report that the suspects may be traveling to Regina in the Arcola Ave area around shortly before noon in a black, Nissan Rogue with SK license 119 MPI.

Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said police are considering the suspects to be in the capital city and is calling on anyone with information on their whereabouts to come forward.

RCMP said it appears some of the stabbing victims were either targeted or were random victims.

“It is horrific what has happened in our province today,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore.

Police ask the public to take precautions and consider sheltering in place. Do not leave a secure location. DO NOT APPROACH the suspects. Do not pick up hitchhikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies or info to 9-1-1. Do not disclose police locations.

Update 12:21 pm

SK RCMP say they received a report the suspects may traveling in the Arcola Ave area around 11:45 a.m. in Regina, SK in a black, Nissan Rogue with SK license 119 MPI.

If in the Regina area, authorities ask the public to take precautions and consider sheltering in place. Do not leave a secure location. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitch hikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies or info to 9-1-1. Do not disclose police locations.

As the suspects are at large, we have also asked for the alert to be extended to Manitoba and Alberta.

RCMP say they will continue to provide updates as available.

 

UPDATE 10:01AM –  RCMP have released information that there are multiple victims, in multiple locations, including James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon. The victims may have been attacked randomly.

Suspects Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson remain at large on what is now a Province Wide Alert.

The Saskatchewan RCMP received information from members of the public that an incorrect picture was issued of Myles Sanderson.

Based on this information, further investigation occurred and we have now included the attached updated description and photograph of Myles Sanderson.

Damien Sanderson is 5 foot 7 and 155 lbs with black hair, brown eyes.

Myles Sanderson is 6 foot 1 and 240 lbs with brown hair and eyes. See new photo.

7:14am, Sunday, September 4, 2022: Melfort RCMP used the SaskAlert system to send out notice of an incident on the James Smith Cree Nation after receiving several calls that multiple stabbings had occurred.

7:57am: the following pictures and updated information were released: Update for the Dangerous Person Alert issued by the Melfort RCMP for multiple stabbings on James Smith Cree Nation. Suspects are Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson. Damien Sanderson is 5’7” and 155 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Myles Sanderson is 6’1” and 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

8:15am: Information was updated to include that the suspects may be in black Nissan Rogue with SK license plate 119 MPI. With this information release, RCMP have declared this a Province Wide Alert.

If in the area, seek immediate shelter/shelter in place. Do not leave a secure location. Use caution allowing others into your residence. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitch hikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies or info to 9-1-1. Do not disclose police locations.
