The leader of an Aboriginal band in northeast Saskatchewan says the federal government should recognize the Ile-a-la-Crosse boarding school as a residential institution.
John Dorion, chief of the John Cochrane First Nation, says his band is considering joining the class action lawsuit against the government.
Dorion explains many of his band members attended the Charlebois Day School in Cumberland House.
He says it was run very similarly to the Ile-a-la-Crosse school, and thinks former students from both schools should be included in the residential school settlement agreement.
Dorion doesn’t accept the government’s argument that it shouldn’t have to pay because the schools were run by churches.
He also says he plans to hold meetings soon with his band’s members to plan a course of action.
