A well-known Saskatchewan Metis man was honoured during a celebration of Metis culture this past weekend in Saskatoon.
The “Master of the Metis Fiddle”, John Arcand, was recognized during the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company’s fourth annual celebration of Metis culture.
Metis playwright Maria Campbell wrote and directed the production in which Arcand was honoured for his contributions.
Campbell says a Metis from across Canada is honoured every year — and this year, it was Arcand.
She says Arcand has passed on his love of fiddling to many others, which helps keep Michif culture alive today.
Campbell also says Arcand has done a lot to document Metis culture and history, adding it was the perfect time to honour him because of the National Michif Language Conference taking place in the city at the same time.
