The chief of the Muskoday First Nation says he is pleased with his band’s new $10.2 milliion TLE settlement with Ottawa and the provincial government.
A wide range of dignitaries from Ottawa, the province and neighbouring First Nations attended a signing ceremony on the reserve yesterday.
The money is intended to make up for a shortfall of land the band was entitled to under treaty.
The band is also entitled to purchase up to 15,384 hectares of land in the province on a willing seller/willing buyer basis. The land can then be converted to reserve status.
Chief Austin Bear says the settlement is fair, fulfills the honour of the Crown, and will be used wisely.
Bear adds his First Nation will look to use some of the land entitlement for commercial development in or around Prince Albert.
