Band-Owned Gas Bar Filling Role In Inner City

A First Nations-owned convenience store and gas station is working to improve the lives of people living in Saskatoon’s core neighbourhood.

The Fire Creek Gas and Grill is owned by the One Arrow First Nation.

It’s been open since last December, but it celebrated its grand opening this past weekend.

Acting manager Jan Cunningham says residents have welcomed the store because they see themselves reflected in it — since several First Nations and Metis people work there.

She says the store is currently working to bring in more items to help people who don’t have cars and who have a difficult time getting to larger shopping centres.

Cunningham says the store has been quite busy.

She says so far the profits have enabled One Arrow to send twice as many of their members to post-secondary education.
