Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark is requesting the lowering of the Métis Flag at city hall to honour the late Senator Mike Maurice.

Maurice, a respected elder known to many as Moshum Mike, passed away earlier this week after a lengthy illness.

In a media release sent out Thursday, Clark said the late Métis elder made a major contribution to the city.

“He always had such a warm smile to greet us, he always brought a sense of hope about what we could do by working together and caring for each other, and he provided so much encouragement and support to so many people who needed help. His legacy in our city is huge.”

Maurice was known for his work with young people, working with St. Michael Community School, Saskatoon Indian and Métis Friendship Centre and White Buffalo Youth Lodge. He also served on the Saskatoon Police Chief’s Advisory Committee for over 20 years.
