A fastball team from New Zealand is coming to northern Saskatchewan in July.

New Zealand will take on the Sask. Prairie Selects in a doubleheader July 21 at the JRMCC Sports Grounds, which is located on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

“We’re pretty fortunate to get this opportunity to host them, typically they go to the big cities when they host this event,” said Kevin Roberts, who is the manager and coach of the Prairie Selects. “Us and Shellbrook are the smaller communities that were able to get in this year, so that’s an achievement for us to host an international event.”

This twin bill between the Sask. Prairie Selects and New Zealand is part of the Super 8 International U14 Boys Invitational Fastpitch Series.

“This is pretty much as good as you get for the under 14 age category,” said Roberts. “Their team is a select team, so they are able to get some good players on their end as well.”
