An official with the Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation is speaking out about the community’s recent rash of vandalism and break-ins.

Director of education Rosalie Tsannie-Burseth describes the outbreak as serious, but says the community is taking steps to prevent it from turning into a crisis situation.

Tsannie-Burseth says band members were recently summoned to a meeting where the issue was addressed in a “holistic and constructive manner”.

She says at the end of the session, residents decided to adopt a new curfew bylaw.

The bylaw proposal has been submitted to Ottawa, and Tsannie-Burseth says they are hoping to hear something back by November 15th.

She adds other suggestions at the meeting included installing more elders at school and starting a block parent program.
