Saskatchewan minister Ralph Goodale says the Trudeau government is determined to pursue a more consultative approach with First Nations as it moves to get the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion built.
A recent Federal Court of Appeal ruling sent the Liberal government back to the drawing board after a judge found Ottawa was not consultative enough with Indigenous groups in it its pipeline building efforts.
Rather than appeal the decision, the Liberals have opted instead to appoint retired Supreme Court Justice Frank Iocobucci to oversee the consultative process with Indigenous stakeholders in an effort to get the pipeline built.
Goodale, who is the minister of public safety, says the government aims to get the process right this time round.
“We’re going to take the judgement, from the Federal Court of Appeal, and apply very carefully the principles that the judge laid out in terms of how to do this properly,” he says.
