A vice-chief with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says this week’s conference on water issues in Saskatoon couldn’t have come at a better time.

For the past two days, delegates have been discussing a variety of issues concerning water on reserves, how it is used, and the need to protect it.

The federation’s Lawrence Joseph says climate change, industrial activities and increased usage are all issues that need addressing soon, before serious problems develop like the E-coli outbreak at Yellowquill.

Joseph says water is both a jurisdictional issue and a health issue for all First Nations in the province.

This week’s conference wraps up this evening with a banquet. The CBC’s Wendy Mesley will be the keynote speaker.
