Residents of a southern Saskatchewan First Nation could be offered the chance to own off-reserve homes by the end of next month.

The Pasqua First Nation is located about 75 kilometres northeast of Regina.

For the past few years, it has been working on an initiative that would see its residents given the chance at owning a brand new home in Regina.

All that’s required is that residents applying for the grant earn between $22,000 to $39,000 a year and have good credit standing.

Band urban housing coordinator Ted Goodenoff says the lots are being given to the band by the city of Regina for almost nothing, with the hope the newly-built homes will rejuvenate the inner city.

Goodenoff says the project has received funding by both the provincial and federal governments.

He also says it is in the final stages of approval.

A Centenary Fund committee is currently studying the proposal. If the green light is given, Goodenoff says construction could begin on five new houses by the end of September.
