Northern Drowning Deaths Dip Sharply In 2004

The annual report from the Lifesaving Society of Saskatchewan is indicating there were no drowning deaths in the North last year.

The report has been released to coincide with Saskatchewan’s Drowning Prevention Week.

In 2003, the organization says there were five drowning deaths in northern Saskatchewan.

Society spokesperson Kim Lebersback says her group was shocked to see the extreme decline in numbers.

Lebersback points out the lifesaving society gets its numbers from Saskatchewan’s Coroner’s Office.

She explains that while there may have been some boating deaths in the North last year, drowning was not pinpointed as the exact cause of death in those cases.

According to her group’s numbers, 12 people drowned in Saskatchewan in 2004.
