Norcanair Shuts Down Operations

Northern Saskatchewan has lost one of its biggest air carriers.

 

Norcanair announced yesterday that it has suspended operations for the foreseeable future.

 

President Dave Webster says an outstanding insurance claim regarding an incident that saw one of its planes damaged at the Saskatoon airport a couple of years ago has cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars.

 

Webster says his company’s insurance woes were compounded last September when one of Norcanair’s other planes was damaged during a landing in La Ronge.

 

Webster says these outstanding insurance issues have to be resolved before his company can get back on its feet again.

 

The company started operations a little over three years ago to provide some competition to Transwest Air.

 

The shutdown means 24 employees in La Ronge, Prince Albert and Saskatoon have been thrown out of work.

 

The airline serviced La Ronge, P.A. and Saskatoon, as well as several Athabasca communities — including Stony Rapids, Uranium City, Fond du Lac and Wollaston Lake.
